Karoline Varin-Jarkowski was born and raised in Poland and moved to Canada in 1985. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Waterloo. Karoline is interested in our conceptions of time and place and as such questions the definition of reality. The definition of time and place is different for a child, the elderly, the mentally and terminally ill. As an immigrant, one experiences a “double” reality: a suspension between two cultures. The passage of time distorts reality-relationships and once familiar surroundings become distant, our remembered reality becomes uncertain. Karoline tries to explore the overlapping of possible “realities”, adjacent to our tangible one.
