Ernestine Tahedl was born and educated in Austria receiving a master’s degree in graphic arts from Vienna. She immigrated to Edmonton, Alberta in 1963 and was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1977 and of the Ontario Society of Artists 1984. She received the Governor General’s Canada 125th Anniversary Medal in 1993, was the recipient of the 2000 Arts and Letters Award from the Arts and Letters Club of Toronto and the Queen Elizabeth II Golden and Diamond Jubilee Medal. She also was honoured with the Golden Decoration of Honour for services to the Republic of Austria in 2016. Her selected collections include: Gulf Oil, Bell Canada, Royal Bank, Imperial Life, Reader’s Digest, Esso, Bank of Montreal, Royal Alberta Museum, Museum of the City of Vienna, Moderna Galerija, Zagreb and the Government of Ontario Art Collection.
